This website, savethewords.org, is an effort by Oxford's dictionary to save endangered words. The words are "up for adoption," or you can just cruise around the website checking out words you never knew existed.
Here are some personal favorites with some usage tips:
Squiriferous adj.: Having the character or qualities of a gentleman.
Chivalry surely isn't dead, that young man was squiriferous.
After college, I plan to start my own business...
tragematopolist n.: a person who sells sweets
Willy Wonka is the most famous literary tragematopolist.
Impress your parents, perhaps veil a complaint.
antipelargy n.: reciprocal or mutual kindness; love and care for children
Her father never showed any antipelargy; he completely forgot his daughter in his will.
"Just headed back to my crib/lovenest/pad," easily transforms into a less cheasy, more intellectual phrase.
nidifice n.: a nest
There was a single egg in the nidifice.
Ask a "dumb" question and still sound smart.
quaeritate v.: to ask
I really must quaeritate, how long have Tom and Jane been together?

blateration n. blabber, chatter
I just could not be at that party any longer, I got stuck in a corner listening to her blateration.
